  • Here are eight ways to troubleshoot Chrome not showing notifications.

If you rely on Chrome notifications for important news, emails, and other information, your world can come to a standstill if notifications aren’t working properly. Fortunately, it’s usually not too difficult to fix Chrome if it’s not showing notifications. Here are eight things to check when you’re having trouble.

Check your internet connection

Not surprisingly, notifications rely on a strong internet connection, so make sure you have a reliable connection, whether it’s Wi-Fi or cellular. If you’re using Windows, for example, check the wifi icon in it notification areaand make sure other applications can use the Internet. Playing a video using YouTube is a good test to make sure your connection is fast and reliable enough.

Make sure notifications are enabled for the website in question

You won’t see notifications from websites that you don’t have permission to display, so make sure notifications are enabled. The first time you visit a website, you may see a pop-up asking you to show notifications, but if you choose to block notifications, you’ll need to enable them if you later change your mind. Open the website you want to receive notifications for, and then click the button Close with key icon on the address bar. To the right of Notificationsmake sure you slide the button to the right, which enables the setting.

The browser may be configured to not allow notifications. A few clicks can fix this problem whether you are using Windows or Mac.

In Windows, click the Start button and later Settings. In the left navigation pane, select Systemso Notifications. At the top of the page, make sure Notifications is on by sliding the button to the right. In it Notifications from apps and other senders section, make sure Google Chrome is also on.

Make sure Gmail’s own notification is enabled

Some websites have their own proprietary notifications that work independently of Chrome notifications, so it’s worth investigating to see if this is your problem. Perhaps the best example of this is Gmail, which has its own notification options.

To check, open gmail and then click the Settings icon (shaped like a gear). Click See all configurations and scroll down to desktop notifications. Make sure New mail notifications on is selected, and then click Save Changes at the end of the page.

Turn off focus assist or do not disturb

Both Windows and Mac have their own version of Do Not Disturb that helps you stay focused without annoying distractions. However, if these features are enabled, you won’t see notifications from Chrome. Make sure they are turned off.

In Windows, click the Start button and then Settings. In the left navigation pane, choose Systemso focus assist. Click Off.

If you have a Mac, you’ll want to disable Do Not Disturb. To do this, click on the Control center at the top right of the menu bar, and then click the Focus icon. If you see the icon dimmed, it is now off.

keep the site open

Sometimes it’s the simple things that you overlook. If you’re not getting notifications for a particular website, make sure the website is open in Chrome. If you accidentally close the site, you can pin the tab to make sure it stays open.

Make sure the tab is not muted

Are you missing notifications because you don’t hear the notification sound? Your tab might be muted. Right-click on the tab and from the drop-down menu choose Unmute the site. If the only option is to mute the site, there may be a problem with your computer’s audio: the volume may be too low or muted.

restart chrome

If you’ve tried everything here and notifications still aren’t working, a reboot may fix the problem; this may remove a temporary glitch or reset a temporary setting that is preventing notifications from working properly. Close and restart Chrome, making sure to close all instances of the browser if you have multiple windows open (including those on other virtual desktops). To make sure you get them all, it’s often easier to restart your computer.
