Apex Legends Season 13 is live, adding the new playable legend Newcastle, the Downed Beast point of interest to Storm Point, and plenty of balance adjustments (all of which are listed in the Season 13 patch notes). The new season also makes some interesting tweaks to the ranking system.
As of Season 13, the way you earn Ranked Points (RP) has changed, and you are no longer safe from demotion once you reach a new medal level; In the past, hitting gold meant you could never go back down. to Silver, but that is no longer forever the case. Below, we cover everything you need to know about the Ranked changes and how to avoid being demoted.
medal levels
Season 13 introduces a new medal tier: Rookie. This new tier will sit below Bronze and will act as the introductory tier for new players playing ranked for the first time.
That means the new path in Ranked is: Rookie → Bronze → Silver → Gold → Platinum → Diamond → Master/Predator.
This means that the Bronze tier now has an entry cost, which presents a risk of queuing up in a ranked match as soon as you’re at what was previously the lowest tier in Apex Legends. And in that sense, the entry costs have also changed.
Entrance cost
For those who don’t know, queuing in ranked will cost you a set amount of RP per match, the same points you need to earn to move up in ranked. This means that in order to earn RP, you have to earn enough during a match to make up for the amount you’re spending just to queue.
Previously, each medal level had a fixed RP cost: Bronze was 0, Silver was 12, Gold was 24, Platinum was 36, Diamond was 48, and Master/Predator was 60. That’s no longer the case, as each individual division within each medal tier will now cost a different amount of RP, increasing with each division (except for the Master/Predator tier). The full breakdown is detailed in the table below.
Division IV | Division III | Division II | Division I | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Bronze | fifteen | 18 | twenty-one | 24 |
Silver | 27 | 30 | 33 | 36 |
Prayed | 39 | 42 | Four. Five | 48 |
Platinum | 51 | 54 | 57 | 60 |
Diamond | 63 | 66 | 69 | 72 |
Master/Predator | 75 | 75 | 75 | 75 |

Earn RP
The way you earn RP will change a bit in Season 13. Respawn hopes the tweaks will lead to more rewarding team play, as ranked previously only rewarded players who were good at fighting. This new system shares some of the love, ensuring that a player who is good at other aspects of being a good teammate, like keeping the team alive and finding loot, can still benefit.
As of Season 13, all living members of a squad gain RP every time someone kills. Actually killing or assisting with him will still give you more RP, but you no longer have to directly participate in every firefight to make sure you’re actually earning RP.
On top of that, there is no longer a kill/assist cap on earning RP. If you go on a murderous rampage, you will still earn RP for every kill or assist you get, albeit with less earnings for each subsequent kill or assist up to the minimum.
Additionally, the bonus RP earned for placing well is being adjusted. For most medal tiers, placing 20-11 with one to three kills/assists will now no longer be enough to be positive in terms of RP. Respawn is adjusting those values so getting 20-11 is now considered a “loss” while getting to the top 10 is a “gain” where your chances of being positive have greatly increased regardless of whether you have kills or assists. .
The timing of assists has also been extended, so damaging an enemy within 15 seconds of them being hit and subsequently killed (instead of just 10) you will get the assist bonus. Also, if an enemy you helped take down revives and then is immediately knocked down again, you still get the assist RP bonus, despite not being part of the takedown that leads to their death.
You now also earn an additional 100 RP just for moving up to a new medal tier. For example, if he earns enough RP to go from Silver I to Gold IV, his bonus RP will carry over and he’ll get an extra 100 points on top of that.

Third Party Kill Steal
In past seasons, you could turn a team into a third party (the act of engaging in a fight that was already in progress between two teams to take advantage of their weakened state) and kill every member of the winning team, then finish off the members already on the team. downed from the losing team and still get RP for all those kills, even though you had nothing to do with taking down most of the second squad members. This is called “third party murder robbery”.
However, it is not necessary to remember the term, because it no longer exists. In Season 13, Respawn is disabling the ability to do this, which means you won’t earn RP for taking down players that another team already took down for you.
degradations
As of Season 13, you can be demoted. That means getting to Platinum IV doesn’t mean you’re safe from going back to Gold I, for example.
To make sure there isn’t too much fluctuation (and frustration) with this, you have demotion protection for three matches after a promotion. So if you go up to a higher medal level, you can’t go back to the previous medal, no matter how much RP you lose, until your fourth playthrough. However, once you get to match four, there’s no way to avoid getting dropped except by consistently winning and/or earning enough RP to stay positive.
When you are demoted, your RP value will be reduced to 50% of the previous level. Going back to the example above, if you’re Platinum IV and get demoted, you’ll be downgraded to Gold I with 50% of the RP required to go back to Platinum IV. This will ensure that you don’t immediately drop back to a lower division if you keep losing.
