Final Fantasy 14 developers have been working hard to fix the housing lottery system that was introduced with patch 6.1 last month. After a very shaky launch, the FF14 housing lottery was temporarily pause while the dev team resolved an urgent fix due to numerous technical bugs preventing lottery bidders from winning parcels even with the best bid; obviously this was causing frustration for players who finally thought they had any hope of getting a piece of land in Eorzea, not yet adventurers. Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida announced today that his team has completed the necessary fixes to bring the lottery back online and will implement it on Monday, May 16, during his maintenance to restore lottery data.

Once maintenance is complete, lottery winning numbers should now display correctly and temporary holds on parcel purchases/relocations will be lifted. If a player previously won a parcel of land before the lottery system was discontinued, they should be able to claim that parcel after maintenance. It will be important for lottery winners to finalize their land purchase before the next lottery starts, otherwise they risk losing their land, although gil must be repaid.

How the system will work

The lottery system will be carried out in cycles of 9 days; the first 5 days will be for entries and the last 4 days are to give winners ample time to claim their property. For example, the next lottery cycle will start on May 26 at 8:00 am (PDT); for 5 days, adventurers will be able to enter the lottery on a particular housing plot of interest, no need to sit around a billboard for days like in the past, just enter and go about your business; after the 5th day, the winners will be determined, but a new lottery won’t start for another 4 days so current winners have enough time to log in and claim their prize, seems fair enough.

Since the next lottery cycle will start on May 26 at 8:00 a.m., winners before the lottery closes must finalize their purchase before May 26 at 7:59 a.m.

“Because this is so important, let me reiterate: You must finalize all land purchases for this current lottery before the next lottery cycle begins.” -Naoki Yoshia

Lottery winners who have already received a refund

After the maintenance on May 16, some players may find that they won their lottery despite Square Enix already giving them a refund for the technical difficulties they experienced. Yoshida confirms that SE will not withdraw such refunds from players as, according to Yoshida, “these housing lottery issues have been significant and have caused a great deal of stress and frustration for many players.” That is exciting news for those lucky enough to log in after maintenance to find out that they are new homeowners, if only the real estate market in RL was that generous these days!

An interesting, if not comic, piece of information Yoshi-P shared is that in patch 6.2 Square Enix plans to include an NPC within the housing districts whom players can voluntarily choose to return any ‘accidental’ refunds; it’s funny because I’m not sure who would bother to do such a thing, after all this is not a real currency we are talking about here and the fact that the developers are spending their time to create such an NPC is funny to me. Now if players get some kind of reward for willingly returning virtual currency is still unknown but I’m not sure what kind of reward would make sense for such an act, SE is the one who did the booboo and should move on. her at this point.

Maintenance is only a couple of days away, so FFXIV players have a lot to look forward to before patch 6.2. Not only the return of the housing lottery, but also the Island Sanctuary, which in many ways will be an alternative to FFXIV housing, although I think it will be even better since players will have an entire island (size unknown) to do the his. Island Sanctuary is scheduled to arrive in patch 6.2, still a few months away.

What do you think about the Final Fantasy 14 hosting system? If the lottery works as intended, do you think it will solve the problems that have plagued the FF14 housing system for years? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
