Laguna Woods live shooting: Shooter ‘tied up’ with power cable after one dead, five injured

One person was killed, four others were “severely” injured and another person has “minor” injuries after a gunman opened fire inside a church in Southern California on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency dispatchers received a call of a shooting inside the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods at 1:26 p.m. PT on May 15, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

All of the victims are adults and have been admitted to area hospitals.

A suspect, described by police as an Asian man in his 60s, was detained at the scene and two handguns were recovered.

The church in Laguna Woods, a city of about 16,000 people about 50 miles south of Los Angeles, held its weekly in-person worship services on Sunday.

About 30 to 40 people, many of them Taiwanese, were inside the church during the shooting, police said.

A statement from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said officials “no one should be afraid to go to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, the community and everyone affected by this tragic event.”

The shooting comes a day after a gunman killed 10 people at a grocery store in an apparent racist attack in Buffalo, New York, one of the deadliest mass shootings in 2022.

Shooter’s motive and ties to church unknown, police say

Police say they have arrested an Asian man in his 60s after a shooting left one dead and five injured at a church in Laguna Woods, California.

Most of Laguna Woods is within an age restricted community

The majority of the population of Laguna Woods, about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles, lives within a large age-restricted community formerly known as Leisure World, where at least one family member must be 55 or older.

The city is also about 10 miles from the University of California Irvine.

California congressman: ‘This is a national epidemic’

California U.S. Representative Katie Porter, who represents a swath of Orange County in Congress, said that in the wake of the shootings in Laguna Woods and Buffalo, shootings have become “a national epidemic.”

“We need elected officials across the country and at all levels of government to step up and lead, not just think and pray,” he said.
