Lyft Driver Celebrated For Refusing To Ride Passengers Over Racist Comment

A Lyft driver in Pennsylvania has become a social media hero after he kicked out a bar owner for making racist comments.

James W Bode shared on social media dash cam video of the incident that took place outside Fossil’s Last Stand, a biker bar along the 400 block of Race Street in Catasauqua.

The video shows Mr. Bode waiting in the car as driver Jackie gets into the vehicle. He greets her warmly: “Hi, you’re Jackie, right? How are you?”

As he enters the vehicle, he says to Mr. Bode, “Oh, you’re like a white man.”

The driver, perplexed, asks: “What is that?”

“Are you… are you… a white guy?” Mrs. Jackie responded, to which Mr. Bode said, “Excuse me?”

She patted him on the shoulder and replied, “You’re like a normal guy, do you speak English?”

“No, you can get out of the car,” Bode said. “I am going to cancel the trip. That is inappropriate. It is completely inappropriate. If someone wasn’t white sitting in this seat, what would be the difference?

“Are you serious?” the woman asks, as another man tries to get into the car.

Mr. Bode told the man that he was canceling the trip due to Ms. Jackie’s comments.

The male passenger did not take it well: “You are a fucking asshole. You are a piece of shit,” the man told the driver. “I should punch you in the fucking face.”

“Are you going to threaten me? Assault?” Mr. Bode replied. “You guys are fucking racists.”

“And you’re a fucking asshole,” the man said as he closed the car door, before adding: “F***ing N***** lover.”

Bode warned them that he would call the police.

In his Facebook post, Mr. Bode wrote: “A police report was filed (just because of the threat of assault) I’m not sure if that will do anything… if you make me feel uncomfortable I will absolutely do the same, especially in my car or property. Yes, they noticed I was recording, yes, I have signs on my car that indicate it.”

His video has received more than 10,000 likes on Facebook and has been shared almost 4,000 times.

In a follow-up post on Sunday, Bode said: “To everyone who reached out and showed support, thank you. I really appreciate it.

“But this is how it should be everywhere, always. It shouldn’t be ‘the guy’ who did it or said it… we should all be that person. Speak up if you feel uncomfortable about it because it makes them uncomfortable, as it should be. Fuck racism.”

Catasauqua police confirmed that the woman seen in the video is the owner of Fossil’s Last Stand, Jackie Harford. They have launched an investigation into the matter, reported lehigh valley live.

In a tweet on Sunday, Lyft praised Bode for his handling of the incident.

“We are incredibly grateful to Lyft driver @Jameswb333 for instantly removing this hate and upholding our zero tolerance anti-discrimination policies. We are looking into these riders and are in touch with James to show our appreciation,” he said.
