Mercy’s Super Jump Could Become An Official Ability In ‘Overwatch 2’

One of the big complaints surveillance 2 so far is that supports haven’t received the same level of attention as their tanking and DPS cohorts. With less protection from enemies due to only having one tank per team and a reduction in CC abilities, supports are ready to pick to dash in and flank opponents.

Now, it looks like Mercy is ready for an update. For years, Mercy players have been able to exploit her technology to briefly let her fly in the air, even without activating Valkyrie. While the super jump has been an open secret for a long time, it is not explained at all in-game and can be tricky to pull off. However, in the future, the super jump could become an official part of Mercy’s kit.

“While there are plenty of guides and videos for those who want to learn the method, it ultimately requires a complicated sequence of keystrokes and conditions that aren’t accessible or obvious to the average gamer,” the developers wrote in a blog post.

“Internally, we started testing improvements to Mercy’s verticality, leaning on the unintended consequences of player discovery. We want to go one step further by making the “super jump” ability more consistent for everyone, not just players who know the (not so) secret technique. Mercy’s mobility has always been a core part of their kit and we will continue to look for ways to accentuate it and make it more accessible to everyone.”

It’s worth noting that this has been discussed for at least a couple of years. Making super jump a formal ability was brought up in a Q&A with developers in July 2020, with lead hero designer Geoff Goodman noting that it was a “reasonable request”.

While it’s good to hear that it might soon be a lot easier for players to activate super jump, I wonder how Mercy mains will take the news, especially if the tech is put on a cooldown instead of being made into, say, an ability. passive. Still, giving Mercy more mobility (or at least an easier way to activate super jump) should help her evade enemies and diving flankers.

However, when discussing the role of supports in general in surveillance 2, the developers say it’s important to make sure supports can survive and be effective without necessarily having more mobility. “We know that support players want additional tools and power to have more impact on surveillance 2, and the role remains our top tuning priority as the beta continues,” they wrote.

The blog post hinted at a few other changes, such as reducing Moira’s damage and healing “to bring her more in line with other supports.”

Adjustments to Junkrat and Symmetra could also be on the way in the future. Elsewhere, the post touched on other beta learnings so far. For one thing, the team found that tanks and supports die more often in surveillance 2 than in the live game. Meanwhile, the developers say that queue times have improved a lot since Open Queue mode was added last week: “After Thursday’s update, players on average experienced 48% less time waiting for a match, leveling off gradually by about 22% improvement over the weekend. For both damage and support players, beta queue times are now faster than live 6v6 service without sacrificing match fairness or quality measures.”

Lastly, there will be one more balance patch for this surveillance 2 beta. However, you will only have a few days to test the changes you introduce, as this first beta version is scheduled to end on Tuesday, May 17 at 2 pm ET.
