MultiVersusThe official cinematic trailer is all about team-ups, as characters from various Warner Bros. properties are thrown into a shared multiverse. MultiVersusThe cinematic trailer also confirmed three new characters for its roster: looney tunes‘ Tasmanian devil, Scooby Doois Velma, and The iron GiantThe titular sentient robot.
The Iron Giant appears last in the trailer, announcing himself as Superman in a heartwarming duet with DC Comics’ Superman, and even dons the red ‘S’ symbol from his animated film. This appears to be a match made in heaven as this moment in MultiVersusThe cinematic trailer finally unites the two. However, some fans are upset by the Iron Giant’s inclusion and find issues with the way he is depicted.
MultiVersus’ iron giant is potentially exploitative
The inclusion of the Iron Giant has caused some disappointment among devoted fans of The iron Giant film and a thematic message that the main character expresses through his actions. The iron GiantThe character is staunchly opposed to violence and is taught not to use his built-in weaponry, but Iron Giant is now used as a cameo mascot that recklessly charges into combat. More recently, the Iron Giant was used as a character’s avatar at the end of ready player one, battling entire armies in a virtual reality environment. This has angered fans who know this is what the original character was up against, with many believing her inclusion in MultiVersus to also be grossly misrepresented of the character’s morals.
Ultimately, it’s up to Warner Bros. which characters are selected, and the choice of Iron Giant was likely due to brand awareness and the fact that fans would be able to instantly recognize the character as part of MultiVersus‘ line up. Still, fans question the decision given that it represents The Iron GiantThe themes of ‘s null and void in terms of how the character fits. If it were up to them, the Iron Giant wouldn’t be part of any title that requires him to engage in combat or violence.
The iron giant of MultiVersus is also considered healthy
Of course, not everyone has their moral compass aligned in this way for an inherently fanservice-based crossover fighting game, and some may not care what purposes the Iron Giant is used for outside of its own. animated movie canon These people seem to see the inclusion of Iron Giant as a fun nostalgia trip to one of their favorite childhood movies. In this way, it can be seen that they are able to play as Iron Giant in MultiVersus.
Some fans have also expressed that the Superman and Iron Giant team-up is wholesome and that MultiVersus does not promote legitimate violence or a penchant for violence despite being a fighting game. As a platform fighter, it’s hard to argue that any action or combat is purely violent or malicious, especially due to MultiVersus‘cartoonish style.
One cannot say that SpongeBob SquarePants is inherently violent now that he is a part of Nickelodeon Brawl Starsfor example, like this MultiVersus It could be said that it offers the same lightness. It will be at the discretion of each fan if the inclusion of this character bothers them or not. But if the Iron Giant is going to be in any Warner Bros. game, this is perhaps the healthiest use of the character given how he relates to a canon interest in Superman. In the meantime, interested fans can now sign up for MultiVersus‘ Closed alpha, starting next week.
MultiVersus is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
