Netflix cuts 70 animations, more than 60 roles in social networks in addition to 150 layoffs

In addition to the layoffs of 150 full-time Netflix employees on Tuesday, the company has laid off another 70 workers at its animation studio as several planned animated series and movies have been scrapped. The broadcaster also laid off 60 to 70 contractors who worked for

Social media and publishing channels including Strong Black Lead, Golden, focused on Asian Americans, Con Todo, focused on Latinx, and Most, focused on LGBTQ.

Among the animated projects not moving forward, as first reported by Variety: the Ava DuVernay-produced series “Wings of Fire,” “With Kind Regards from Kindergarten,” and “Anthracist Baby,” the latter of which is based on Dr. Ibram. X. Kendi Children’s Book. Animation roles, including writers and crew members, were not full-time but related to projects that had been scrapped.

Additionally, Insider has learned that several animation projects have been sent back into development, including the highly anticipated animated series “Matilda,” based on the novel by Roald Dahl. Netflix’s acquisition of Dahl’s catalog in September was a key intellectual property acquisition for the company in the children’s space.

In addition, dozens of writers and contractors have been laid off from the streamer’s social media channels and editorial verticals, including some on the Tudum fansite, which saw an earlier round of contractor job cuts in April.

“I moved into a new apartment that I’m now trying to figure out how to pay for,” a Netflix contractor who was laid off today told Insider.

The extensive layoffs, while a fraction of Netflix’s 11,000-strong staff worldwide, sound alarm bells for those watching the streamer’s business and following smaller staff reductions over the past month. In April, Netflix laid off 25 full-time employees in marketing, in addition to nearly a dozen workers at Tudum, which launched in December.

The 150 full-time employees affected Tuesday worked across all divisions, and Deadline reported that some executives from the original context were swept up in the layoffs.

A string of bad news has dogged Netflix, with the layoffs following a particularly harsh first-quarter earnings report that revealed the loss of 200,000 subscribers and forecast another 2 million of its 221 million would leave the service in the current fiscal quarter.
