Read an excerpt from the Star Trek friendship book

Over the last 50 years, Star Trek has portrayed many iconic friendships. And now, The Star Trek Book of Friendship is exploring these relationships and giving fans a look at Trek’s “longest and most endearing friendships,” including Kirk and Spock, Picard and Data, Janeway and Seven of Nine, and many more.

The Star Trek Book of Friendship goes on sale May 10, 2022 and IGN has an exclusive excerpt from the book that sees its authors Robb Pearlman and Jordan Hoffman discuss the legendary relationship between Kirk and Spock.

This fully authorized book, with illustrations by JK Woodward, delves into these friendships and many more, complete with a foreword by Robert Picardo (The Doctor) and Ethan Phillips (Neelix) of Star Trek: Voyager.

The Star Trek Book of Friendship retails for $18 USD, with a portion of the proceeds going to The Planetary Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering the world’s citizens to advance science and space exploration.

Without further ado, here is an excerpt from The Star Trek Book of Friendship:

Jordan Hoffmann: Before we start bickering like Kirk and Gorn, do you have an all-time favorite on-screen friendship from Star Trek?

Rob Pearlman: I will always be more supportive of the friendship of Kirk and Spock. I know that’s not the best shot in the quad, but nothing short of an agony booth will change my mind in this or any other mirror universe.

Hoffman: You can’t beat a classic! And of course that is also my choice. They have a true friendship and recognize how they complement each other. Usually when I think about the two of them, it’s, “Oh, Kirk needs Spock so bad,” which, of course, he does, but I think Spock also sees things in Kirk that he’s actively trained himself to suppress.

Each has traits that the other simply can never have. Kirk knows that without Spock to keep him in check, he will by default become a man of action and end up using that Kirk Chop too much.

Pearlman: I’ve been thinking about this a lot, maybe even thinking too much, as is my wont, about when Spock sacrifices himself to save the Enterprise in The Wrath of Khan. And they do the hand thing. . .

Hoffman: Wait, you’re going to make me cry! You can’t surprise me with that!

Pearlman: I’m sorry, I’m not sorry. Pretend I’m Sybok and share your pain with me. What I’m trying to say is that it’s exactly when we share those final moments with Kirk and Spock that I think we all realize that declaration of friendship has never before been so deeply articulated. For example, when Spock returns to the Enterprise in The Motion Picture, Kirk says, “You’re back! Great! Please sit down!” And as much as we know Spock is glad to see him, he has his own reasons for being there. And as a half-Vulcan, he never allows himself the luxury of sharing, let alone expressing, his joy at being there. together.

Hoffman: The closest we would have seen them express something like that would have been at the end of “Amok Time” from the second season of TOS, when Spock thinks he has killed Kirk, and then Kirk says, “Aha! I tricked you!” that he plays to laugh. Those kinds of stances, those ribbing back and forth hark back to that first 3D chess game of “Where No One Has Gone Before” from season one, and it’s completely abandoned by the time we get to The Wrath of Khan.

There’s an opening that goes both ways, like when Kirk takes over, that scene in Spock’s quarters with the awesome sequined IDIC mural, Spock stops him and says, “Jim…I’m a Vulcan. I have no ego to hurt.” It’s very different from the last episode of the first season of “Operation: Annihilate!”, when Kirk’s brother is killed and Spock clumsily tries to extend condolences to him. Kirk simply cuts him off with a “Yeah, yeah,” and finds an excuse to spring into action just to let Spock walk free.

The Star Trek Book of Friendship will be released on May 10, 2022 for $18 USD, with a portion of the proceeds going to The Planetary Society.
