Season 17 of ‘Destiny 2’ arrives shrouded in total secrecy

Once again, I’m pushing my luck writing an article like this, but the weekly reset has come and gone, and we still don’t know anything about Destiny 2 Season 17, not even its name, aside from things like zone changes. tests and new Crucible maps and modes. (er, map and mode, singular).

Generally speaking, Destiny 2 will preview a new season with a trailer a week before its release. This seems to strike a balance between building hype and keeping things under wraps. It’s also just… pretty basic marketing. But this time? Something is different.

While there are plenty of hints about possible Year 5 storylines, we haven’t gotten an iota of actual official information about the plot or activities for this season. This is where we are:

The DMG Community Manager posted about the lack of information and the timing:

Community Manager Liana responded to a tweet about the trailer with an apparent reference to Season of Arrivals, which didn’t feature its trailer or reveal much until launch day:

Hardly anything seems to have leaked about the season yet, but it’s only a matter of time as more time passes, as almost always something will be accidentally activated on the Xbox or PlayStation website or stores. So far, I have only heard of one alleged possible leak, the name (potential spoilers follows), where “Season of the Haunted” was supposed to be found somewhere in the code on Bungie’s website. I have no idea if that’s legit, and it’s a bit of an odd name. The first thing that comes to mind is the Presage “Ghost Ship” quest Bungie did, which focused on Calus and an abandoned ship full of Scorn. This makes my brain wonder about a “haunted” version of Leviathan himself returning to the game, but that may be too much to hope for.

Still, the obvious answer is that this has to be something great, narratively. They have to be hiding a big plot beat that they want people to learn right when the season arrives, rather than even a week or days in advance.

Beyond that, the only big question mark is the item getting the 3.0 treatment for season 17, which presumably has nothing to do with the plot. We heard about Stasis and Void 3.0 months in advance, so it’s strange that we’re less than a week away from release and neither Solar nor Arc 3.0 have been confirmed. However, that could change later today, as the final TWAB before the season seems like the perfect time to reveal it. Then again, very little about the lead up to this season’s release has been standard.

bungee has be doing this for some specific reason other than trolling the community (although they seem to have fun with it too). I’m partly excited for what’s to come, though trying to plan coverage around a potential reveal every hour every day leading up to launch has been extremely difficult.

So, TWAB today, and again, who knows about the trailer, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until just before launch, unless they surprise us with a drop at the end of the week.
