Tabletop RPG Bundle Raises Money For Reproductive Rights

Board game developers have stepped up in support of reproductive rights. The Dungeons & Dragons-focused podcast known as Roll for Romance recently announced a collaboration with just over 200 desktop developers to launch a fundraising project on Itch.io called TTRPGs for Reproductive Rights.

“Reproductive rights are under attack,” the project description says. “According to a leaked opinion, conservative Supreme Court justices plan to overturn Roe v. Wade. Join us in raising funds to support and protect the right to abortion. Now is the time to act and make our voices heard!”

Anyone interested in supporting the cause can choose from over 275 games, including The Abortionists, a live-action RPG that follows “a group of feminist activists” as they “risk imprisonment for providing illegal abortions” to people impoverished. “In the act of empowering women, they discover new things about their own power as women.” While playing, players “will discuss feminist politics, counsel people seeking abortions, and perform abortions using a meta-technique.” All proceeds of the package go to Planned Parenthood and the National Network of Abortion Funds.

“Reproductive rights are fundamental and non-negotiable human rights that we must fight to protect,” the project description stresses. “All proceeds from this package will be donated to Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Funding Network so that much-needed funds are distributed nationally and locally and across race, gender and economic status.”

While board game developers have come forward, video game developers have generally steered clear of the reproductive rights issue. Most of these simply have not issued any statement on the matter. However, Bungie noted that “everyone has the right to choose their own path” and that “freedom is expressed in all facets of life”. The developer went on to say that “Bungie is committed to safeguarding the freedom and privacy of its employees and providing support to all employees affected by this decision.”

Like Bungie, the developer behind Psychonauts 2, Double Fine, has spoken out on the issue of reproductive rights. “We strongly believe that a decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade would deny people their human rights and directly impact the lives, freedoms and choices of everyone in this country,” the company said in a statement. “For those who can, we will encourage them to donate to an organization that defends these rights.”
