USFL Week 5: New Jersey Generals top New Orleans Breakers

week 5 of USFL season continued on Saturday with a crucial showdown between the New Orleans Breakers and the New Jersey Generalsas both teams entered with a 3-1 record.

It was the Generals who emerged victorious, defeating the Breakers 27-17 to improve to 4-1 on the season, while New Orleans fell to 3-2.

On the Breakers’ opening drive, they faced a quick 4-and-3, but pulled off a fake punt.

New Orleans linebacker Jerod Fernandez ran down the middle for a monster 43-yard gain to get the Breakers on. Field goal distance. So was the 3-0 lead.

The Generals responded with a quick touchdown on the next drive, courtesy of quarterback De’Andre Johnson. New Jersey had a 7-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

On New Jersey’s first possession of the second quarter, running back Trey Williams broke up a 28-yard gain to move the Generals downfield.

Then the Generals started the second quarter scoring with another rushing TD by Johnson to take a 14-3 lead.

In the ensuing advance, the Breakers got things rolling with a monster kick return from WR Taywan Taylor.

blunder

The Breakers couldn’t capitalize on the big win, as QB Kyle Sloter was intercepted in the red zone by Generals safety Shalom Luani later in that series.

New Orleans made up for it on their next drive, when Sloter hit wide receiver Jonathan Adams for a 20-yard touchdown to close the gap, 14-10.

Johnson dropped a dime to KaVontae Turpin for a 39-yard gain that put the Generals in enemy territory.

The big win helped give New Jersey the last word, adding another Field goal before the break to extend their lead, 17-10.

The third quarter started with consecutive goals from both teams.

First, Sloter found Johnnie Dixon for a 10-yard touchdown for the Breakers to tie things up at 17 apiece.

After a lightning delay, play resumed, but it was another blow for the Breakers.

Sloter was once again intercepted by Luani, this time on the goal line.

On the next drive, the Generals got a taste of their own medicine, as Johnson’s pass was intercepted at the goal line.

Moving

After the turnover, New Jersey’s Turpin went to work moving the Generals downfield and getting them into great field position to extend their lead.

Denied!

The generals added a Field goal late in the quarter to make it a 10-point game, and things ended there after the Breakers fell short on fourth down.
