It’s been almost eight months since we last got a sneak peek at “The Orville” season 3 and more than three years since the end of season two.
That trailer actually had the season three premiere on March 10, but unfortunately that was pushed back. However, our patience will be rewarded, as the crew of the USS Orville will be back in action on our screens in a few weeks now on the Hulu streaming service.
A lot has changed since April 2019, when “The Orville” season 2 ended, and sadly, the world lost comedic genius Norm MacDonald, who voiced Lt. Yaphet, the Jell-O engineer. However, according to Deadline, he shot all of his scenes before he tragically lost his battle with cancer in September of last year, so this will be one of his final performances.
Other questions to ponder before the first episode, titled “Electric Sheep,” which airs June 2, includes whether Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) will have been promoted to admiral by now, especially after leading the Planetary Union fleet against Kaylon in the Battle of Earth. Y establish a preliminary peace with Krill after that epic battle…? Perhaps he goes through an emotional self-assessment much like Admiral Kirk does in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”
Surely Lt. Cmdr. Is Bortus (Peter Macon) already divorced from Klyden (Chad L. Coleman)? And possibly she even pierced him through the chest with a dagger, as that is how the Moclan request separation. Will Talla Keyali’s (Jessica Szohr) super strength gradually wane like Alara Kitan’s (Halston Sage) did?
All of these questions and more may or may not be answered on June 2.
One of the many, many beautiful things about “The Orville” is Seth MacFarlane’s keen interest in the score, taking his influences not only from “The Next Generation” but also from James Horner’s epic score to “Star Trek II.” and “Star Trek III.” and even “Star Wars” on occasion.
Let’s also not forget the incredible list of Who’s Who in Hollywood who have directed episodes of “The Orville” so far, including Brannon Braga, Jonathan Frakes, Robert Duncan McNeill, and even Jon Favreau.
